THE next meeting of the Hinterland Shire Steering Committee will be held
at the Palmwoods Memorial Hall on Sunday, April 6, at 2pm.
The proposed shire would extend from the Bruce Highway to the Conondale
Ranges and from the southern boundary of Caloundra City to the northern
boundary of Maroochy Shire.
Steering Committee vice chairman Harry Whitehouse said the area had a population
of about 40,000.
"This would mean that the new shire would be one of the top 20 most populous
in Queensland," he said. "More massive developments are predicted for hinterland
areas."
Mr Whitehouse said that a shire centred on Landsborough or Palmwoods would
ensure growth in the area was managed.
He said there was no major infrastructure involved in setting up the new
shire, other than the Baroon Pocket Dam and its associated water reticulation
which was owned by the Caloundra Maroochy Water Board.
