COUNCIL BRIEFS
MAROOCHY Shire Council is contemplating supporting the establishment of a regional sporting complex on the university campus. Stage one is to be a synthetic athletic track to Olympic training standard. An amount of $300,000 has been suggested as the amount council should contribute.
Cr Littler said he appreciated the need to provide good athletic facilities on the Coast, but he did not support spending $300,000 from next year's sporting facilities capital works program.
"This money is needed to improve and expand our existing sporting facilities," he said. "One only needs to drive past the Jubilee Drive sporting fields on a Saturday morning to see how inadequate our sporting facilities are."
THE delay on the refurbished wagon in Eudlo Park has been caused by the council's financial hiccoughs associated with the implementation of the computer system.
Cr Littler said that now the computer problem was being fixed, work on the wagon project would proceed.
PARKS staff are now in a position to complete the planning and prepare for construction of the entrance statements to Palmwoods.
MAROOCHY Shire Council is seeking nominations for its 1997 Maroochy Bicentennial Foundation Fellowship Awards which provide grants to encourage the pursuit of excellence in any given field.
To date 36 successful nominees have been helped by grants totalling more that $102,300. Recipients have been recognised in fields such as music, sport, arts, community service, town planning, theatre, environmental management, medical research and service to the handicapped and disabled.
Entry is open to residents who have lived in Maroochy Shire for a minimum period of two years.
Nomination forms are available from Council libraries and offices at Nambour and Maroochydore and close at 5pm on Monday, May 19.
MAROOCHY Shire Council and the Queensland Audit Office have agreed to an audit review aimed at determining the treatment of financial information.
The review will examine the new financial systems to ensure the information provided is a sound basis on which to prepare the 1996/97 financial statements and 1997/98 budget.
MAROOCHY Shire residents and schools will receive two free trees or shrubs next financial year. The $45,000 free tree initiative has been approved for inclusion in the 1997-98 budget.
Council is now researching how best to execute the plan and is negotiating with the Queensland Nurserymen's Industry Association over a token system for supply of the plants. It is estimated 30,000 trees or shrubs will be distributed under the scheme.
