Celebration honours Hall’s 75th

DURING the past 75 years, the Palmwoods Memorial Hall has become not just a landmark but the town's best used public facility - and on May 6, at 10am, Palmwoods will celebrate its anniversary.

Highlight will be Mayor Don Culley unveiling a painting donated by local artist, Joy Breen. The painting depicts the hall and its surroundings during the early years. It will hang in the foyer, under a welcome sign donated by local signwriter, Bill Teagle.

Local historian Wendy McMullin is organising a display of historical photos and committee member, Ray Knight, is collecting memorabilia for a display.

The hall's 75th anniversary committee has traced many past members and their descendants to issue invitations to this special morning and is eager to hear from others who may have had special connections with the hall over the years.

The Palmwoods Memorial Hall was opened on May 6, 1922 and dedicated to the memory of those who served in the First World War.

Before the town's churches were built, it served as the area's Sunday School and during World War Two, the local community ran dances for the troops stationed in the area.

This started a tradition of Saturday night dances which continues today, raising thousand of dollars for local organisations annually.

Today the hall caters for a wide variety of groups who meet regularly to enjoy the facilities provided by the hall committee who work voluntarily to maintain this important community asset.
