Safety houses extend to Eudlo
THE Safety House program has been extended to Eudlo.
It has been successfully operating in Palmwoods, Woombye and Chevallum for a number of years and has approximately 69 clearly defined "Safety Houses" in the area.
President Gordon Percival said the program had been an excellent preventative measure for crime against children.
"The best way to judge the success is the fact that there has been little usage of the houses," Mr Percival said. "It is more of a preventative measure than anything, and we don't know how many crimes we prevent."
Mr Percival said Safety Houses were most often used during weekends and late in the afternoon as well as for children travelling to and from school.
He said there was a misconception that high school students could not use the houses.
"Some of the high school kids think that they are too old to use the houses. In fact they often need the houses because of school bullies hassling other children," he said.
All safety houses are clearly marked so that children can easily identify them.
Potential safety householders are interviewed and screened by the local committee, and additional screening is conducted by the Queensland Police Service.
Safety House meetings are usually held on the first Tuesday of the month in the Palmwoods State School staff room at 7.30pm.
Anyone interested in helping with the program should contact Gordon Percival 5445 9660.
