Palmwoods Progress news…

THE last meeting of the Palmwoods Progress Association was a refreshing and informative evening with a good attendance. It is great to see our attendance numbers on the increase.

Did you know there is a daily changeover of 400 school students in Palmwoods going to and from 13 schools morning and afternoon?

The PPA has drawn the local authority’s attention to the safety for these children who at present are in danger of being involved in accidents by traffic on the roads and by crossing the Palmwoods rail line opposite Kolora Park.

The PPA has brought to the attention of Council and the Local Area Plan consultants the urgent need for school bus parking facilities on the eastern sides of the railway line, in particular, the widening of Chevallum Road in front of Kolora Park on the railway side.

This would claim railway land for bus parking only for at least four to six buses each school day, mornings and afternoon. The need for action is NOW before there is a death of one or more of our children.

Some time was taken in discussion of PPA taking part in the Nambour Sugar Cane Festival at the invitation of the organiser Cr Peter Wellington.

PPA Management accepted and formed a sub-committee to provide an attractive float depicting a Palmwoods icon. Community organisations and any other Palmwoods businesses residents who may be interested in forming other mobile attractions in conjunction with this should contact Ron Corelli, Jim Cushing, Bev Everson or Ray Knight or write to P.O. Box 181 Palmwoods.

Ray Knight spoke to the meetings as a member of the CAMCOS Committee for this area, outlining the rail implications for Palmwoods in to the future next 50 years. Anyone who would like more information should contact Ray Knight, 5445 0485.

The need for a suitable site for a sporting complex at Palmwoods to service the inner and outer hinterland areas was also discussed and will now be raised with the Local Area Plan Consultants.

Cr Geoff Littler reported that the Palmwoods Local Area Plan had been delayed.

President Ron Corelli said he had been approached to change the name of the Palmwoods Progress Association because it had been suggested to him that there may be some presumption that "Progress" meant pro-development.

He suggested the name could be changed to Palmwoods District and Community Association. This was put to the vote but it was unanimous the name Palmwoods Progress Association be retained because of its long historical links with the town.

The next meeting of the PPA will be held on Thursday, June 12, at 7.30pm in the meeting room at Palmwoods Memorial Hall. All residents are welcome to attend. Meetings are usually of one hour duration.
