BEHIND THE NEWS

PALMWOODS Scout leader Ian Griffith can point to clear evidence that the Palmwoods Recycling Centre is being abused. Keeping the area clean has become a good fundraiser for the group which lost its bottle collection to recycling some years ago. The fact that the clean-up has become more than it should, is that Ian now knows most of the staff at the Nambour dump on first name terms, such is the frequency of the trips he has to make. The good news is that he did manage to fix the television he found dumped at the centre and the Scouts now have their own TV.

HOPEFULLY a young male passenger on the train to Brisbane wasn’t planning a quiet trip last week. Former Palmwoods resident and Olympic golden girl Glynis Nunn-Cearns boarded at Eudlo with her two young children, who immediately took a like to the chap and began playing at his feet. A conversation followed and the young man, obviously unaware of who he was talking to, asked Glynis what she did for a job, and from there, on to what sport she played and who she played for - Australia of course!

LOCAL shopper says it’s even harder to go past Wades to Nambour these days. Although a loyal Wades shopper for many years, she sometimes stops to pick up the odd item while banking in Nambour. And while she has never had a single problem at Wades, two major supermarkets in Nambour, within two weeks, have sold products which are out of date - not just by a few days, but by weeks. It not only means the inconvenience of having to go back and complain, but a trip to Nambour as well. The locals seem to have it all over the big boys these days.

THE ANZ Bank is still something of a meeting place. Geoff Littler reports that he has been to the Nambour branch twice and both times found himself standing beside Palmwoods residents.

FAREWELL to John Adams of Palmwoods Seafood and Takeaway who has been cooking up the tucker for more than six years. The staff of the Palmwoods District News are going to miss the bacon burgers John has been custom making for "tuckshop" each week. Meanwhile there’s plenty of action behind the window shades at the shop. New owners Peter and Judy Nelson are promising a few surprises when it re-opens for business later this month.

IT was a big adventure for the boys when a group of Palmwoods larrikins got together for a two week trip fishing in the Gulf. Palmwoods to beyond Weipa may be a long way but not far enough to deter this erstwhile gang. Despite one of their vehicles being sideswiped in a hit and run in the bush and two of their number being thrown out of an outback pub for playing pool in the nude, they came back heavily laden down with fish and good cheer.

Head Above's new team Robert, Kathy and Jennifer gave
a fitting farewell to former owner Kim Price.
