WHAT'S HAPPENING IN YOUR TOWN

MEMBERS of the Palmwoods Progress Association welcomed Maroochy Shire Mayor Don Culley as guest speaker for the June monthly meeting.

President Ron Corelli brought a number of local issues to the Mayor’s attention and advised him that the association, founded in 1909, was now in its 40th continuous year of service to the Palmwoods community.

Its projects have included Kolora Park, introduction of the Australia Day Citizen Awards and the Palmwoods Heritage Walk.

The Mayor said he was assured of the Palmwoods Progress Association’s proud heritage and the strong efforts being made by its management and members and congratulated them on their past and present efforts.

The Mayor said his council would be aggressive financially and that a $200 million budget was big business. He said his council was upgrading their knowledge of all council duties.

Solicitor Alan Taylor was the second guest speaker, who discussed the implications of the proposed gas line through the Palmwoods area.

After much discussion with some residents at the meeting who could be affected, his recommendation was not to sign anything regarding the gas line route.

The president suggested to those present that they may write to the PPA (P.O. Box 181 Palmwoods) if they were affected. He said if there were numerous letters of complaint, the PPA would formulate a letter to the gas company and a further letter to Mr Neil Turner.

The PPA sub-committee formed to co-ordinate the PPA float entry in the Nambour Sugar Festival has already obtained a low loader for the float, with sincere thanks to Keith Roberts Earthmoving of Woombye.

A replica of the Palmwoods Memorial Hall is now under construction. The PPA is now seeking a suitable gazebo to go on the float. Banners and skirting depicting Palmwoods and its community organisations are also still required.

Any residents who can assist may contact Jim Cushing, Bev Everson or Ron Corelli. The big day is Saturday, August 9.

Heritage walk plaques have now arrived and will soon be placed at the appropriate sites, thanks to assistance offered by the Woombye Sunrise Rotary Club members.

Cr Geoff Littler reported to the meeting that the LAP consultants would soon be making contact with Palmwoods residents and community organisations for consideration to streetscapes, townscapes, churches, preservation of the town and Palmwoods, future growth and needs.

The council is taking strong action on signage on council and public land. Signage has to meet requirements and approval from council.

A strong discussion regarding school buses and public bus services for Palmwoods took place, with bus company representative David Grant and Geoff Parks, regarding parking for their buses and preferred routes.

The meeting was closed at 10pm after energetic and strong input of ideas and problems to be faced in the coming months.

The next meeting will be on Thursday, July 10 at 7.30 in the Palmwoods Memorial Hall meeting room. All welcome to come and have a say on Palmwoods and its future.
