School heritage building saved
A PART of Woombye State Schools history has been saved from demolition by the schools Parents and Citizens Association. The 90-year-old "old library" building was to have made way for a much needed cover play area but thanks to the work of the P and C and principal Rob Edmonds, it will now be relocated on school property. The building is being moved during the school holidays to a site adjoining the schools main car park and top oval, where it will be used for community and school activities. "We will be able to use the room for music and for our instrumental program, and we hope to also use it as miniature hall for class performances," Mr Edmonds said. "We are also encouraging parents to use it for development activities such as better parenting programs." He said the buildings new location would give it a prominent position in the community. "It is part of the schools history and I think having it out the front where it is visible from the roadway, will help people to appreciate it as part of our heritage." Mr Edmonds said the move would not have been possible without the help of the P&C, which had committed itself to the success of the project. "The P&C applied for subsidy and has received 50 percent of the cost from the government," he said. "It has also made a solid financial commitment of $25,000." Mr Edmonds said the old building would receive a much needed facelift to bring it in line with the Building Compliance Act before it is used. "It will be totally upgraded including an electrical refit, the addition of toilet facilities for the disabled and storage room will be added underneath." Mr Edmonds said he was hopeful that the move would be completed by the end of the school holidays. |
