COUNCIL BRIEFS

DESPITE a change to the plans for upgrading the crossroads at the Nambour Connection Road, the project is still on course for completion by the end of next year. The consultants Maunsells have met with stakeholders in the area to discuss an alternative to the run-ins for the flyover in an effort to lessen the impact on property holders. The meeting was well received and the new plans will now be put to the Main Roads Department and it is hoped to get on with the job soon. Cr Littler said only one property owner - apart from the two resumptions in the centre of the roundabout - would now be affected by resumptions for the entry/exit roads for the flyover.

COBBS Road, New Street and Campbell Street from Hill to Carey Street in Woombye and Lower Landershute Road from Citrus to Roys Road in Palmwoods are to be upgraded under the bitumen resurfacing program.

APPROVAL has been give to naming the service road parallel to the Nambour Connection Road near the Keil Mountain intersection Shires Road and the service road near Thrill Hill and the Christian Outreach Centre, Schubert Road. Ann Street in Woombye was originally called Schubert Road after a pioneer family but was renamed from the German during the First World War.

THE old tennis court at Briggs Park in Palmwoods is to be converted to netball and basketball practice courts after the Palmwoods Tennis Club relinquished the lease on the court. Two towers are to be erected at a cost of $1240 and the locks will be removed from the gate so that the courts will be open to the public.

COUNCIL’S Greening Australia officer is to call a meeting with concerned residents of Chevallum Road and Railway Street with a view to forming a Landcare Group to look after the creek area which runs parallel with the railway line and into the lagoon at Kolora Park. Costs for council to undertake preliminary works in the area are being investigated. The move comes after concerned residents wrote to Cr Littler pointing out that the area has become a dumping ground and that lantana and morning glory grows rampant in the area. Water has become stagnant and a mosquito breeding ground.

THE cost of repairs and/or replacement of the Palmwoods town clock is now being investigated by the Engineering Services Department. Cr Littler said the Nicklin memorial clock in the main street had been repeatedly vandalised and its hands had again been broken off. There have also been consistent problems with the clock stopping and keeping poor time.

COUNCIL is investigating the feasibility of paying dog licences at agencies where rate payments are made which would allow local residents to pay at the post office.

THE CEO is to investigate the ramifications of waiving the $385 burial fee for children up to the age of two and the $495 fee for children between two and 10 years at all council cemeteries.

CR Littler has been appointed to the newly formed Maroochy Pest Management Working Party which will hold its first meeting on October 9 to examine "The national weed strategy - a strategic approach to weed problems of national significance." The party is to develop a scientifically based council policy that balances the need to control weeds with public health.

THE parking amnesty has been lifted in Nambour and motorists will be required to pay the parking meters from September 29, although there will be no increase in parking fees at this time.
