Plaques mark history

Di Robinson and Peter Atkinson of Woombye Rotary
Sunrise fit one of the PPA's historical plaques at the
Palmwoods Railway Station.

HERITAGE plaques, erected as part of the Palmwoods Progress Association’s annual Australia Day project, can now be spotted in strategic locations around Palmwoods

Ten brass plaques have been placed on buildings of historical significance identified by local historian Wendy McMullin.

Members of the Woombye Sunrise Rotary Club kindly volunteered to erect the plaques.

"It is hoped to expand on this project each year and to have further plaques erected annually until the marked buildings fully support the heritage walk previously prepared by the association," president Ron Corelli said.

"We are extremely grateful to the members of the Woombye Sunrise Rotary club for making this a true community project."

In other Progress news, Ray Knight reported to the last meeting on the activities of the Palmwoods Local Area Plan meeting. He advised that none of the items discussed had addressed economic growth and stability.

Mr Knight said he was concerned that a submission made to the consultants was reported as being a joint submission when it had not been endorsed by the Progress Association.

Raffle tickets are available for the Palmwoods Memorial Hall replica/children’s playhouse which featured in the sugar parade. Tickets are $1 and the raffle will be drawn at the next meeting on Thursday, October 9.

Anyone wanting tickets should contact Bev Everson on 5445 0975 or Ron Corelli on 5445 9172.

Palmwoods and Woombye Progress Associations combined to sponsor a map of the area. These maps are now available within the towns.

A brief discussion regarding the 1998 Australia Day celebrations took place and a sub-committee was formed to organise activities and entertainment.

President Ron Corelli asked members to bring a neighbour or friend to the next meeting, in a bid to boost membership and community representation.

"It is imperative our membership becomes stronger to give more strength of voice for input to the Palmwoods Local Area Plan discussions before the plan is put into effect," he said.

"Local businesses in particular should be sure to give their opinions and recommendations as if we do not show our hand now we will miss out."

The next meeting of the Palmwoods Progress Association is Thursday, October 9, 1997 at 7.30pm in the Meeting Room at the Palmwoods Memorial Hall.
