Pirate Success

The Palmwoods Singers cast aboard SS Palmwoods

PIRATES in Men’s Pants, the latest production from Palmwoods Singers, proved to be a big hit with the large crowd who turned up at the Palmwoods Memorial Hall.

Audiences responded well to the prompts of Quentin Montague and the cast were in fine form, their obvious enjoyment of the production quickly transferring to the audience.

Marjorie Murray and her "assorted anonymous accomplices" came up with an entertaining score and the clever props added to the fun of getting the SS Palmwoods to sea. The ship scenes and accompanying melodies were a highlight.

The First Mate played by Keith Bridger and Captain Splendid played by Peter Sanders shone in an outstanding performance from the whole cast, while Stan Hyde stole the show as the elusive mermaid in the final scene.

Hopefully we have not seen the last and the Palmwoods Singers will consider an encore performance in the future as it certainly deserves another run.

In other news from the PSTS, the Spring Medley presented as the third of the Wednesday morning concerts, played to a full hall. The audience especially appreciated the involvement of the junior section.

The group is now preparing special items for the RSL Reunion at the hall on October 11. Of special significance will be The Captives Hymn, written by Margaret Dryberg who died in the Japanese prisoner of war camp at Palambang in Sumatra in 1945.

Palmwoods Singers also provide the catering for this important day.

Although the Palmwoods Singers Theatrical Society is far younger than most other coast theatre groups, it has acquired an impressive amount of equipment.

Dedicated members have fundraised tirelessly and the group enjoys great community support.

Their latest acquisition is a grand piano. This project was helped by a grant of $3000 from the Maroochydore Shire Cultural Development Fund to help pay the deposit and assistance in the form of a private loan.

The group has met the latest challenge enthusiastically and has made a considerable mark on repayments.

The piano takes pride of place in the Palmwoods Memorial Hall and has already provided enjoyment for many.

To celebrate, the Palmwoods Singers, with the support of the Palmwoods Memorial Hall Association, have planned a special recital featuring a highly accomplished pianist.

With the assistance of Geoff and Trish Littler, they are delighted that Bernadette Balkus has agreed to fly to the Coast to give a recital at the Palmwoods Hall on November 22.

There will be one performance, so seating will be limited and bookings are essential. Admission of $15 adults, $10 concessions, includes cocktails. For further information phone 5478 9539.
