Around the world at Woombye THERE were kilts, kimonos and more than one sombrero on at the Woombye State School this month, when the Year Seven students turned their classroom into a World Expo. The impressive classroom display, called the Around the World Expo, was the culmination of weeks of study, research and assignments focusing on multi-cultural Australia. More than 20 different countries were represented at the Expo, including Saudi Arabia, Greece, Holland, Chile, Egypt, Romania, Indonesia, China and France. Students divided their classroom into stalls, each featuring the national dress, foods, musical instruments and other artefacts from the chosen country. They also completed comprehensive assignments covering each countrys history, economy, language and religion. According to teacher Lee Emerson, the concept behind the Around the World Expo started with the study of other cultures and how they impacted on life in Australia. "I think more importantly, the Expo gave the students a chance to be involved in putting together a big project, which required a great deal of determination and perseverance," Mr Emerson said. "Students have had to employ all the values we hope that they will take with them into society - perseverance, patience and effort." The display concluded with a Foods from Around the World lunch, which was attended by parents.
