Anna's plea for helpers PALMWOODS resident Anna Handley is calling for volunteers to help her and her five-year-old son Jesse become more mobile. Anna, 25, suffers from the rare debilitating condition Friedricksons Disease, which is similar to multiple sclerosis. She then had to face life in a wheelchair after a car accident in 1992. Anna said she was looking for volunteer help to substitute the 30 hours of government support she receives each week. "I have people who come and help out who are really wonderful, but it really isnt for long enough," she said. "The government cant afford for me to have full time help, and thats why Im looking for volunteers." Anna needs people to help her do even the simple things such as shopping and paying the bills. She has been going to exercise therapy, but also needs a lift just to get there. What would be just a small gesture from each volunteer could make a big difference to Annas life. "I would like to be able to use the pool and take Jesse up for a swim in the mornings, but once again, I need a lift," Anna said. "And I would really appreciate someone to come for a couple of hours during the middle of the day, because I get a bit bored and lonely being all by myself day in, day out." And the hot weather is extremely draining if youre stuck in bed or in a wheel chair. Anna said that even a simple trip out of the house helped lift her spirits. "Just to get away for a while or have someone to help me with some work is wonderful," she said. "I have had quite a bit support from the Palmwoods community over the years - and Im extremely grateful for that." Anna said she would appreciate the assistance of volunteers on Mondays and Thursdays from 9.30am to 3pm and someone earlier in the morning. Anyone wishing to lend a hand to Anna can contact her on 5478 9676.
