Lions Lines A highlight of the year for the Lions Club of Palmwoods-Woombye was the Youth of the Year Quest judging at a dinner on Tuesday, February 24. Once again the club was blessed with a wonderful group of students, representing most of the senior education facilities in our immediate region. After reading their resumes, one wonders how they find time to compete in this prestigious event. This year we are very proud to be associated with, and receive sponsorship from, the national Bank of Australia Community Link, which assists youth in our communities. This is a project, in which we, as Lions, are proud to participate. Prior to the dinner, students were interviewed by the judges and awarded points for leadership, sporting, cultural and community interests, personality, general knowledge, academic achievements. The final 20 percent of points was awarded at the dinner, when the contestants performed their public speaking segment. Contestants were: Brooke Rickards and Caitlin Hawting of St. Johns College, Nambour; Savvas Hondroudakis and Terri Eichmann of Nambour State High; Kathryn Rooke-Jones of Burnside State High and Nicholas Oettinger of the Christian Outreach College. Overall winner on the night was Terri Eichmann, who was presented with the Kathy Branch Trophy, which her school holds for a year. Terri now proceeds to regional judging, with the potential to further progress up to the national final at Canberra in May. Winner of the prize for the public speaking segment was Caitlin Hawting. Special thanks to Don Harris, the Chairman of Judges who was assisted by Robyn Dunn and Marilyn Keelty. |
