The awards were initiated in 1988 as Maroochy Shire's major project to celebrate Australia's Bicentenary, and provide grants to encourage the pursuit of excellence in any given field. To date 48 successful nominees have been helped by grants totalling more than $130,000. Award recipients have been recognised in fields such as music, sport, arts, community service, town planning, theatre, environmental management, medical research and service to the handicapped and disabled. Entry is open to residents who have lived in Maroochy Shire for a minimum period of two years. The official nomination form is available from council libraries and offices at Nambour or call 5441 8209. Nominations close on Thursday, April 30. COUNCIL'S Food Hygiene training program, "Food for Thought" has been attended by 269 of the shire's commercial food handlers since its commencement in July, 1997. The course is to promote high standards of food hygiene within food shops and restaurants throughout the Shire. A FULL time Economic Development Officer has been employed to encourage the growth of business in the shire, one of the objectives of the Corporate Plan. Les Glover will work with both the business and tourism sectors to ensure that Council's planning provisions provide an environment which encourages sustainable economic growth. The task of managing growth while protecting areas such as amenity and lifestyle are seen as critical to the future of Maroochy. |
