POLICE BEAT A 24-year-old Palmwoods man was killed in a single vehicle accident on the Palmwoods-Montville Road at 2.30am last Thursday. Anthony David Smith of Palmwoods, was the sole occupant of his vehicle when it hit a tree on a straight stretch of road just past Paynters Creek Bridge. Emergency crews had to utilise a tow truck and the jaws of life to free the man from his vehicle. However despite the efforts of ambulance and a hospital retrieval team, he died at Nambour General Hospital three hours later. He was only a short distance from home at the time of the accident, confirming once again that most accidents occur within five kilometres of home base. AN accident occurred at Chevallum School Road when a Diddillibah man who said his thong had become caught under his accelerator was observed reversing uncontrollably before hitting a tree at between 60 and 70kmh. The man had a blood alcohol reading of 0.19, in what was his third offence since November. He was disqualified absolutely from driving and given a suspended sentence. ANOTHER accident occurred on Chevallum Road when a car lost control and went through the front yard of a resident, damaging the garden and the fence. The driver, a Chevallum woman, decamped. Investigations were made and the driver and vehicle were later located. Charges are pending. A WOOMBYE man involved in a minor accident outside the Woombye Cafe was unable to stand and had to be lifted into the police car due to his state of intoxication. The driver was physically unable to supply a specimen of breath and was arrested and taken to the watch house. POLICE have been out in force over the holiday period. Palmwoods has worked with traffic branch police in the Eudlo-Palmwoods area with a number of drivers being arrested for driving under the influence and other traffic offences. AN afternoon of loutish behaviour has ended with two youths from Mooloolaba facing hefty fines for throwing avocados at council workers in Palmwoods. Investigations were made after a complaint from the council workers. This is a serious offence and it is lucky that there were not any serious injuries caused. UNFORTUNATELY there has been another break and enter at the Palmwoods State School. A video and two computers were stolen. Security is being upgraded and hopefully this will deter would-be offenders. AN expensive motorcycle was stolen from Garrards Road, Woombye. During the early hours of April 12, the offenders broke into the shed where the Yamaha SZ750 had been locked up.
