Kimberley joins State's best There will be another feather in the Palmwoods sporting cap when Burnside High student Kimberley Giles heads off to Perth in August to compete in the Australian Volleyball Championships. Proving that Palmwoods is building a solid reputation in the athlete stakes, Kimberley was selected for the State junior team after competing at the State Titles held at Bundaberg in May. I couldnt believe it when my name was called out for the State team," she said. "Only three people from the Sunshine Coast area were selected for the team." Kimberley hasnt looked back since starting she started playing volleyball only two years ago. "I started playing in year 8 where I was selected for the under 16 team. Last year I was chosen for the Burnside High open team," she said. "We came eighth at the National School Cup." With the Sunshine Coast team, Kimberley competed against 20 other teams at the State Titles in Bundaberg where she was chosen for the State team. She trains twice a week with the school team and on weekends with former Burnside High coach Maryanne Walsh who travels from Nanango to train with the girls. In June, she will undergo a two week training camp with Morayfield coach Tim Wilson before heading off to the Australian Championships. A raffle for 200 litres of petrol donated by Goldlink, is being held at the Palmwoods Newsagent to help raise funds for her trip to Perth which will cost approximately $1200. Tickets are $1 each. Further sponsorship or donations to help her reach her goal would be appreciated. |
