Shoot - just what is the name of the game? MAROOCHY Shire Councillor Geoff Littler has been questioned about the spelling on locality signs recently put in place for Landers Shoot. He reports: "The spelling is correct and was first used when the Landers Shoot School was named and opened in 1913. Department of Lands Map Series 2M76 (1943) confirms the spelling of Landers Shoot. "The April 11, 1958, issue of the Nambour Chronicle refers to Landers Shute Progress, Sporting Club and records the election of officers: Patron J. L. Carter; President J Lawson; Vice-Presidents Humphries and B Laxton; Treasurer T Raeburn; Secretary Mr Smals. "I do not know why or how this corruption of spelling came about. However, the spelling of the locality of Landers Shoot was re-confirmed in the Government Gazette July 27,1991, under the Queensland Place Names Act, 1988. "At the time the Surveyor-General wrote to the Maroochy Shire Council confirming the spelling LANDERS SHOOT. He wrote: Please refer to attached evidence which contradicts the councils record of spelling. "The Shoot was, of course, a timber shoot (not chute) presumably owned by Edmund Landers, pastoralist and timber licensee. "There is no intention to change the spelling of Landershute Road." And Cr Littler asks: Can anyone tell me is it Didillibah or Diddillibah? Is it Keil or Kiel? |
