THE June meeting of the Palmwoods Progress Association covered vision, aims and direction to be taken into the year 2000.

Subjects discussed included two major projects to be finalised by the year 2000. There was also discussion of:

  • An icon to improve the town’s identity and its location within the Sunshine Coast
  • Proposed activities to create interest in the Palmwoods township for visitors and its residents
  • Heritage and pioneers.
  • Traffic flow and pedestrian usage
  • Signage in and around the Palmwoods urban area.
  • Railway station improvements and service for residents, in particular the aged and disabled.
  • A new shopping/supermarket proposal and a suitable site for construction.

Palmwoods Progress Association has the distinction of being the longest serving community based group in Palmwoods, having been founded in 1902 and surviving two world wars and a Depression.

It provides a voice/forum for Palmwoods residents, commercial and businesspeople.

"We are now looking at future growth of the town through the introduction of the Palmwoods Local Area Plan soon to be released in its final stage by consultants for the Maroochy Shire Council," President Ron Corelli said.

"Palmwoods people need to be aware of what changes will occur the impact on residents and their families as we head into the 21st century."

He said Palmwoods should stay "Nature’s Beauty Spot" on the Sunshine Coast.

The PPA’s objectives and priorities will continue to look at planning, the town’s infrastructure, marketing activities to promote tourism and employment and community relations.

The association’s monthly general meeting encourages community involvement.

"We believe people will attend our meetings for more important and community based matters, therefore our present and future meetings will be public meetings, to be attended by both members and the residents and people involved with the township of Palmwoods," Mr Corelli said.

"If you have genuine interest and concern for this town of ours, come along to our next meeting on Thursday, July 9, at 7.30pm at the Palmwoods Memorial Hall Meeting Room."

If you can not make it, have a friend attend who can report back to you or have your say by writing to: The Palmwoods Progress Association, P.O. Box 181, Palmwoods 4555, prior to July 9.

The Palmwoods Progress Association will host the rostered dance at the Memorial Hall on Saturday, July 18.
