Lions Lines

THE Palmwoods/Woombye Lions Club’s installation of new officers for the 1998/99 year was held at Clio’s Restaurant, Palmwoods last month.

Before a large audience, including many visiting Lions and dignitaries, immediate past District Governor Lion Peter Donghi installed the following officers:

President Trevor Eichmann, Immediate Past President Gordon Percival, 1st Vice President Helen Latta, 2nd Vice President Jim Rook, 3rd Vice President Jane Wright, Secretary Ken Laidlaw, and Treasurer Fred Manthei.

The club meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays each month at 6.30pm at the Old Chevallum School.

WHEN the news of the terrible disaster in PNG broke, Australian Lions moved at once to adhere to one of the articles in their Code of Ethics: "To aid others by giving my sympathy to those in distress, my aid to the weak and my substance to the needy."

Lions Australia launched an appeal for funds to alleviate the suffering of the people living not so far away from us in PNG whose forefathers and mothers were angels of mercy during the 1939-1945 conflict fought within their country. Many Australians owe their lives to these people.

Not only did Lions launch the appeal, they set it off with a donation from the Australian Lions Foundation of $25,000.

Persons wishing to donate to the appeal should contact their local Lions, Lioness, or Leo Club. Should you be unable to contact a club, Lions would appreciate you forwarding a donation to the Cabinet Treasurer, PO Box 5321, Rockhampton Mail Centre 4702, noting that it is for the PNG Appeal.

All donations of $2 or more are tax deductible.

As with the past appeal during the drought in New Guinea it is money that is required, as while donations of goods are appreciated there is a tremendous problem in getting them to where they are required.

The money purchases the supplies that are of most benefit to the victims, in bulk and if possible, through local suppliers.

Any donations will be greatly appreciated and will get to where it will do most good. Thank you for helping us to help those less fortunate.
