COUNCIL BRIEFS
WITH CR GEOFF LITTLER

RESIDENTS curious about the traffic counter which has been placed across Main Street need not fear the arrival of traffic lights. The counter has been installed as part of the Palmwoods Local Area Plan.
The counter will determine the amount of traffic passing through Palmwoods for future planning and management.

MAROOCHY Shire Council will extend its waste collection service to residences which currently not serviced at Shurvell Road, Hunchy.
The free waste trial will allow residents to apply for an exemption if they wish. The decision to introduce the trial waste collection service was made after a survey of residents in the area indicated that the majority were in favour of the service.

INTERESTING to note that Montville residents have agreed to pay a levy for streetscaping. I understand that Montville landholders have agreed to pay a yearly levy between $220 and $500 on top of their rates. Could this be a sign of the times?

DON’T miss the information session being held at Palmwoods Hall on Wednesday, August 12, from 7.30pm to 9pm to discuss plans for the Kiel Mountain Road interchange. I am advised that planning is well down the track and that it is proposed to call tenders for the work later this year.

THE Measles Control Immunise Australia Program has been launched by the Federal Government. The program requires all children in primary schools from Years 1-7 be immunised by November 6, 1998. Council will use the program as an opportunity to immunise all primary school children against measles, mumps and rubella.

CONGRATULATIONS to Adam Mead of Woombye for being selected to represent Queensland at the Australian Junior Road championships held at Bendigo, Victoria recently.

THE former CEO of the city of Preston in Victoria, Kelvin Spiller, who has 27 years experience in Local Government and now heads the city of Darebin is to join the Maroochy Shire as its new CEO. The city of Darebin is made up of the whole of the former cities of Preston, Northcote and parts of the city of Heidelberg, Coburg and the shire of Diamond Valley. It has a population of 130,000 in an area of 55 sq km, 700 employees and almost $100 million income and 55,000 assessments. It is a complex organisation operating in a highly politicial environment.

THE Planning And Development Committee meeting of July 15, approved the application by D and C Turner to change the existing Lawful Non-Conforming Use of a site at Nicklin Road from Workshop to Contractors’ Yard.
An application by Cameroun and Marzabella to rezone land at Bruce Highway Forest Glen from Rural B to Light Industrial was also approved.

COUNCIL will adopt the Queensland Cancer Fund’s "Going Smoke Free" program by extending its current smoke free policy to include the indoor and outdoor areas of council owned swimming pools.
The complexes at Cotton Tree, Nambour, Palmwoods and Buderim will be smoke free areas. Also, to encourage sporting organisations to develop and implement their own policies, a "smoke-free" clause will be incorporated into all new leasing agreements between council and sports bodies.
