LOCAL business women who are members of Zonta International along with their family and friends enjoyed a theatre night recently. It was the first night of the screening of the film, Sliding Doors, which proved most entertaining. Also enjoyed by all patrons was the supper served after the show when there was the opportunity for local Zontians, Trish Littler, Gayle Wilson, Sue Montagu, Maureen Martin and Chris Maher to chat with other club members.

Zonta Clubs of the wider district are promoting the cause of the Young women in Public Affairs Awards and the profits of their theatre evening will help provide bursaries for Year 12 girls of Maroochy Shire high schools who wish to pursue a career in public affairs.

Application forms for the bursaries are available from the local high schools. October 10, is the closing date for applications.

IN AN effort to provide extra comforts for the residents of the Palmwoods Sundale Hostel, the ladies of the Hostel Auxiliary are selling tickets for a great raffle. The prize is a Scratch-It tree made up of $100 worth of scratch-it tickets. Raffle tickets are $1 each and are available from the hostel or auxiliary members.

The tickets will also be available at the Hostel Ladies Auxiliary annual general meeting on Tuesday, August 25 at 2pm. The hostel auxiliary comprises a small band of women and they would welcome more women to join their ranks.

BELATED birthday greetings to Dulcie Murray of Macdonalds Road, Palmwoods. Dulcie is now 92 years young. Her birthday was in late July but was celebrated with a happy luncheon with family and friends on Saturday, August 1. Dulcie is an avid reader and is always busy with knitting needles or crochet hook, making articles for street stalls and worthy causes. The work she does belies her years. Congratulations Dulcie.

PALMWOODS is a small town but it has a great community spirit. On Saturday, July 15, the Palmwoods Progress Association hosted the rostered dance in the hall. Because of association members on the sick list with winter ills and others away on holidays, there were few members left to hold the fort that evening.

Word went around the community of this predicament and many kind people rallied, some bringing plates of cake and slices and others staying on to help in the kitchen. New president of the Palmwoods Art and Craft Group Ann Borthwick proved a real trooper, not only beavering away in the kitchen right to the end of the night, but also rallying her group’s members for some home cooking. The CWA ladies also did their bit, with Trish Littler and Marie Kretschmer keeping things running smoothly in the catering department.

It was a great night with plenty of patrons dancing the night away, numbers running into three sittings for supper. To those wonderful Palmwoodsians who rallied to help that evening, a big thank-you from the Palmwoods Progress Association.

As a point of interest, two couples who attended the dance came all the way from Beaudesert. They thoroughly enjoyed the dance and friendly atmosphere. At supper, they were fascinated with the photos and memorabilia in the supper room and the history of the town displayed on the walls of the supper room.

LOCAL fitness folk put themselves to the test when they decided to cycle all the way to Boreen Point. The Palmwoods team comprised of Trevor and Darelle Cunning, Karen and Paul Campbell, Brad and Sally Curtis, Phil Giles, Steve Booth and Palmwoods pool manager Jim Sharpe. Lunch at the Apollonian made it all worthwhile, although there were plenty of aching parts to discuss.

PALMWOODS Cut Price store’s Jenny Booth thought she was in for a bigger birthday surprise than she bargained for when husband Steve turned into the Caloundra Airport on her big day (we won’t say which one, but it was a milestone). Steve had often mentioned how much he would like to try parachute jumping so Jenny suspected the worst. It turned out happily as they sailed away on a surprise balloon flight and later celebrated with Palmwoods friends at Harry’s on Buderim.

IN another milestone birthday Jim Gilson of Palmwoods Real Estate also had cause to celebrate with friends and colleagues last weekend and while the Booths were among the guests, there was about a decade difference between these two Leos.

WOOMBYE Community Library is grateful to have four new people join their volunteer staff. There are diverse activities involved in running an efficient community library. Books are chosen and bought, then the title and price has to be recorded. The books are covered with protective plastic, catalogued, stamped with the library identification and finally are shelved ready for the borrowers.

Your library at Woombye is blessed with some dedicated and hard working volunteers who welcome with open arms people who feel they can help on a rostered basis. The new volunteers are Elissa Keen, Annette Hodgins, Evelyn Dau and Charolotte Page. Welcome to you all. We trust you will find this commitment to your community fulfilling in every way.

WHEN the Palmwoods Rural Fire Brigade volunteers and their families got together for a barbecue recently, they got a little more entertainment than they had bargained for when a car rolled and ended up on its roof across the road outside the fire headquarters. The troops were quickly on the spot, directing traffic on a detour around the scene while families lined the cutting watching the action.
