RIDING for the Disabled celebrates 19 years of worthwhile aid to the disabled of this
area at its Open Day on Saturday September 12. A very interesting program is planned, and
I urge all to support this annual Open Day which is organised to show what can be achieved
by the youngsters who now benefit by learning to ride a horse.
A well respected former resident of Palmwoods, who now resides at Kilkivan has been
invited to attend. Ross Nooke was one of the first volunteers with the RDA, and ably
assisted with the organisation of the facility here at Palmwoods.
The RDA Headquarters on Hunchy Road will be the venue and there is ample room for car
parking.
LONG time residents of the Palmwoods and Woombye district would no doubt remember Ray
and Del Townson, who lived and farmed in this area 50 years ago. Ray celebrated his 70th
birthday at the end of August.
Ray and Del - formerly Del Lanham of Nambour - now live in the Bundaberg district,
where they have been cane and pineapple farming since the mid 1950s.
Ray celebrated his 70th at home with members of his immediate family and close friends
who travelled to Bundaberg for the occasion. Ray spent 16 years on the Gooburrum Shire
Council, including nine years as Shire Chairman. Rays older brother Don Townson and
his wife Jean lives in Woombye.
EVERYONE and anyone in Palmwoods turned up in all sorts of weird and wonderful costumes
at the Memorial Hall last month for the party of the year, a double celebration for Phil
and Donna Evans who both hit the big 4-0 within days of each other. Theme for the night
was anything that started with the letter f, which brought out all sorts of
characters from fairies to firemen, Fred Flintstone and Fatima and even a "fat
man" who stuffed his clothing with empty wine bladders, with the exception of one
full one which he could conveniently pour from his wrist. Chicken of the Night award goes
to Mike Harris who set off down to the party from Palmwoods Auto in a delightful fairy
costume and long wig, only to lose his nerve at the door. The story goes that he bolted
home and changed before anyone even got to set eyes upon his beauty. However he can thank
wife Helen for putting everyone in the picture.
GRANDPARENTS day at the Christian Outreach College last week saw a national
representation with proud grandparents tuning in from Tasmania, South Australia,
Melbourne, Sydney, Cairns, and a big turn up from Brisbane. Morning tea and lunch was
provided and served by senior students and the day was greatly appreciated by young and
old.

THE talent of the districts young musicians was showcased last month when
renowned local teacher Isabel Baumann staged her annual concert at the Palmwoods Memorial
Hall.
A highlight of the afternoon was presentation of trophies when Woombyes Fiona
Weight was named Student of the Year to win the annual Palmwoods District News trophy.
Junior student of the year was Richard Ward with Mark Doust winning the keyboard award.
More than 50 students presented musical items before a large audience.
Mrs Baumann once again gave an official farewell to a group of her senior students,
many of them having been her students for more than a decade.
