COUNCIL
BRIEFS
WITH CR GEOFF LITTLER
IT was extremely pleasing to learn from Peter Wellington, MLA, Member for Nicklin, that
the hiccups last month, over the Keil Mountain intersection have been dealt with and it is
"all systems go" to quote Peter.
CONSISTENT rain has brought about an increase in the mosquito population and I urge
residents to take care as they do carry the Ross River Virus. Two species of mosquito in
our area carry the virus. They are Culex Annulirostris (the common banded
mosquito) which breed in pools left after rainfall. Residents can avoid these mosquitoes
by checking their backyard for any ponded water. Aedes Notocriotus breed in tree
holes, rock pools and in containers such as tyres, tins, pot plant saucers and storm-water
gutters. I urge householders to rid their backyards of such containers. Also ensure that
rainwater tanks are screened to prevent breeding
I CONGRATULATE Howard Betts on his appointment as president of Palmwoods Residents and
Ratepayers Association and look forward to working with him on community projects, the
first being the Heritage Tree Walk.
DOG PATROLS were carried out throughout the entire Shire with additional patrols being
carried out in areas where Council had received the most complaints. House to house
registration surveys have now commenced in rural residential areas. Council records
indicate that in addition to initial confirmation of complaints received 60% of all
complaints were acted on and complainants advised of action taken within 2 working days.
There will always be a percentage of complaints which by the nature and the inability to
contact complainants or alleged offenders take longer to resolve.
CONGRATULATIONS to The Woombye School of Arts which is celebrating its centenary this
month. The committee does a wonderful job in keeping the hall viable and well maintained.
THERE has been a general increase in the amount of illegal dumping of wastes in the
Shire. Garden type wastes from households and concrete and rubble from demolition
activities are the most common. Generally, those dumping these types of wastes are of the
opinion that these materials will not create problems if dumped ie garden waste in
bushland will simply decompose and pose no threat
THE Waste Management Team is currently developing a system to manage known dumping
sites and react to new cases of dumping Part of this system will address the need to
ensure that wastes from construction and demolition activities are correctly disposed of,
through increased enforcement of planning conditions. The Draft Waste Strategy includes
specific strategies relating to illegal dumping, construction and demolition waste and the
impact of landfall charges on the level of dumping in the Shire.
THE Palmwoods Memorial Hall Committee has been successful in obtaining a grant from
Jupiters Trust to re-roof the hall, starting as soon as possible. Well done.
THANKS to Woombye Sunrise Rotary Club for the river care work being undertaken in
Victory Park. We all need to become involved looking after our waterways and riparian
corridors.
