Dinner aids swimmer

THE local community has pulled together to help paraplegic swimmer Marayke Jonkers get to Bangkok in January for the FESPIC Games.

Marayke, 17, of Keil Mountain, boasts a lot of national records in her swimming classification and has been selected for the 1999 titles by the Australian Paralympics committee to compete.

Rosemount Gardens’ Pauline Skerman is cooking up an international buffet at the Nambour restaurant on November 27 and is seeking local support in the form of donations of raffle prizes and food.

Marayke’s mum Marion said it had been a real community effort. Pauline, a chef, was preparing the meal and running the function, her staff had donated their time, local musicians would be offering a smorgasbord of classical and popular music.

Pauline said Nambour JCs were doing the bar at the function, Kevin Evans had done a glamour portrait of Marayke but they were still seeking any donations businesses or individuals could contribute.

"It’s a lot of people doing small things and it adds up."

Marion said Marayke had the state championships to compete in in November - ultimately her goal is to get to the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

Anyone who would like to support this young swimmer should ring Pauline on 54421088.

They are hoping to cater for 100 diners.
