COUNCIL BRIEFS
WITH CR GEOFF LITTLER

FIRSTLY a thank you to the Palmwoods Progress Association, Palmwoods Residents & Ratepayers Association and Mr P. Rochow for contributing to the Community Association meeting on November 26.

Things could be looking brighter for Jubilee Park, Palmwoods, if a funding application to the State Government by the Churches Soccer Association is successful. The Association is proposing to upgrade lighting at the Park which is used extensively by soccer and vigoro teams. The outcome of this application should be known by April next year.

I think it is timely that with the prospect of heavy rainfall this summer I should again make residents aware of the increased potential for mosquito breeding in their own backyards. Here are some hints to help fight the bite this summer: Shady yards with lots of trees are likely to harbour more mosquitoes so trim shrubs to reduce undergrowth; Remove stagnant water in the garden and fill pot plant bases with sand to absorb extra water; Wear long sleeved shirts and pants when outside on balmy summer nights.

JUST on the subject of bites, experts are also predicting an invasion of red back spiders this year. A recent incident involving a young Sunshine Coast baby being bitten by a funnel web spider is also a vivid reminder about the menace of these local, unwanted guests!

OUR local area is blessed with natural beauty. One way of preserving this environment is to ensure that each of us dispose of our waste responsibility and appropriately. For example, green waste which is dumped in our bush actually causes great environmental harm. This waste causes weeds to spread and choke our native plants, creates fire hazards and becomes costly to remove. So let’s all do the right thing to all our waste!

For more information on waste management, call council on 5441 8050.

HAPPY Birthday to our Mobile Library which recently celebrated one year of operation in the new vehicle. The Mobile Library visits Palmwoods Town and Eudlo every Tuesday as well as calling at Palmwoods School and Chevallum School on alternate Tuesdays. Everybody is welcome aboard the Mobile and if you are not a member of Maroochy Libraries then staff can arrange for you to join.

For further Mobile Library Timetable information please phone 5475 7161 or call at any Maroochy Library.

WOOMBYE State School - Passenger set down area is included in the program this year. The department of Transport has allocated $30,000 for the project and this will be matched by Maroochy Council. I hope that the urgent work needed at the Palmwoods State School makes the list soon. I will follow this up with the Maroochy Shire Council and local State Member Peter Wellington.

BEFORE signing off this month and on behalf of Trish and myself I take this opportunity wishing each and every reader of this column a very merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
