RAIN Scald and Greasy Heel: These skin conditions of horses, are due to a bacterial infection, following prolonged exposure to wet weather. The infection occurs after local trauma (sandfly bites). Rain scald is commonly seen along the back and upper leg, whereas greasy heel is predominantly found at the back of the pastern and occasionally the fetlock area. The matted hair forms clumps, and if removed there is a raw exposed surface. Try to keep susceptible horses out of wet weather or use rugs to protect them. You can apply an antiseptic to the sores, or try antibiotics.
