Historic club boasts new clubhouse

by Joanna Jones

THE Palmwoods Bowls Club is getting ready to celebrate the opening of a new clubhouse in March. The $450,000 clubhouse being constructed beside Kolora Park and the lagoon is expected to be completed by the end of February.

The plans include a huge covered verandah overlooking the park and lagoon as well as a children's playground.

The existing clubhouse will also be renovated this year and will exist as a reception area and dining room available for functions and parties of up to 120 people.

There will be an additional carpark built adjoining the new clubhouse that will accommodate up to 27 vehicles.

Club Secretary Phil Rochou is excited about the impending opening of the new clubhouse and also the refurbishment of the existing clubhouse.

"The new Bowls Club will provide a major social and sporting venue for this district," he said. "The existing clubhouse was too small to cater for a growing population. We currently have around 250 members and this new facility will mean that we can more than double our existing membership."

Extra poker machines, a pool table and indoor entertainment for children are also planned for the new clubhouse.

As the first bowls club established on the Sunshine Coast, the Palmwoods Bowls Club has had a colourful history of renovation and relocation.

Originally located in Old Bowling Green Road it then moved to its present site with the clubhouse being located in the current toilet block.

The new building and refurbishment of the existing clubhouse begins a new chapter for the coast's oldest bowls club.
