HELP is on the way for unemployed residents of Palmwoods and surrounding areas. Local
unemployed people will be able to register their details in a central employment register
aimed at providing paid or voluntary employment for people out of work.
The Aikido Institute, the Palmwoods Residents & Ratepayers Association and the
Crime Prevention Partnership have banded together and will place a board in an easily
accessible location.
Those members of the community who are unemployed, or who have a need for assistance
around the home (elderly, disabled) or local businesses willing to provide opportunities
(paid or voluntary), are encouraged to register their requirements.
Institute staff and volunteers will then crossmatch the entries and provide an
introduction to the relevant parties.
A preliminary meeting held on Friday February 12 to discuss the concept was well
supported, attendees included Cr Geoff Littler, representatives from Dove Personnel,
Residents and Ratepayers Association, local farmers and the Aikido Institute.
The general consensus of the meeting was that an Employment Register would make a
valuable contribution to the local community.
Issues such as internet access, numbers assisted at any given time, incorporation of
the scheme into "Work for the Dole" status, legal issues and transport matters
were amongst the topics discussed.
There will be another meeting held on Monday 29 March at 7.30pm at the Palmwoods Youth
Club Hall in Briggs Street for all interested parties.
