My Week in Cyberspace
by Forager

"The Heart of the Problem"

Computers are the most awesome devices. They are tools beyond compare. Computers are good, but they are complicated. Many people think that computers are too complicated.

This question of built-in complexity, is at the heart of many people’s problem. Not only are computers complicated, but they are fiddly to deal with.

The good news is this. Elegant solutions are going to come sooner rather than later, as the technologies involved mature further. The bad news is, until then, every time we turn on our computers, we must take our positions, aboard the good ship "Rodent" boldly clicking, where no mouse has clicked before.

However, a leading computer manufacturer is working on a prototype of a walking, talking personal computer. The walking PC is programmed to follow its user around campuses, schools and offices, as well as being useful at home. Sort of like a dog with a mobile phone tower for a tail...Estimated price $4000 retail.

Questions

Q: What does the middle button on the mouse do?

A: Nothing much for normal Windows 95/98 users. It’s a bit weird eh? Why turn out thousands of mice, with extra useless buttons? The mind boggles!

Q: Some people talk about The Web, others talk about The Net, and other terms as wel. Is there a difference?

A: Not really. The Web, The Net, The World Wide Web, The Internet, all refer to the network of connected computers that are switched on 24 hours a day, they in turn, serve as the backbone of the Internet.
