Happy Birthday

Lillian Rice of Old Bowling Green Road celebrated a grand birthday on March 10, and Lillian celebrated the milestone in a very grand way. Many of her friends from near and far, gathered for dinner in convivial surroundings at a restaurant on the coast. A very happy occasion to help Lillian celebrate her 70th. Best wishes for the years ahead Lillian and keep up your good works.

Queen’s Scout Awards

Congratulations to two fine young teenagers of Woombye. Aaron Jenkins and Brett Haselden have achieved distinction by earning their Queen’s Scout Awards. These awards were to be presented at a special evening ceremony at the Burnside Scout Den in Nambour, on Saturday, March 20, but because of incessant rain the venue was hastily changed to the Sunshine Coast Police and Citizens Youth Club premises, where there was ample room for the assembly and parade of Scouts and dignitaries of the Scouting movement. Among the invited guests were the parents, relatives and friends of both Brett and Aaron. Regional commissioner Paul Parkinson outlined the achievements of which Aaron and Brett had to strive to attain to be eligible for the Queen’s Scout Award. The regional commissioner hoped that the award would "encourage the recipients to continue to strive for achievements and goals, and service to their community in their everyday lives’’.

The district commissioner, Fred Millish, invited the parents of Aaron and Brett to step forward and assist him to pin the award to their sons’ proudly worn uniform. Brett and Aaron joined the Scouting Movement as members of the Woombye Cub Pack in the late 1980s, where both earned their first achievement badges. From the cubs they progressed on to Woombye Scouts. There was no Venturer unit at Woombye so both lads joined the Burnside Venturer Unit in 1996. This, and their dedication to the cause, has led to their Queen’s Scout Award presentation. Aaron Jenkins is now a first year apprentice to a firm of shopfitters on the Coast and Brett Haselden is at Gatton University studying for his Diploma of Applied Science.

CWA competitions

The Country Women’s Association of Palmwoods held their very successful annual competitions and display of knitting, crochet, cookery and floral art on March 25. The wonderful exhibition of the talents of the local members was placed before the judges. The winning entries in the knitting and crochet categories will go on to compete at the divisional competitions and the winners of the cookery and floral art sections will be perfecting their expertise for their entry into the next round of competition. Congratulations to all the winners at local level and good luck in the CWA Divisional Competitions which will be held on Friday, April 23, at the Woombye School of Arts.

The general public is invited to attend and view this exhibition of the talents of the CWA ladies of the wider area. Viewing time from 10am.
