A
word from our Vet
Dr Brett Stone B.V.Sc. (Hons), MRCVS (Lond)
ONE of the most exciting drugs that we have had come on the market recently and
which is starting to show outstanding results is Cartrophen Vet. This drug is used for
treatment of Arthritis mainly in dogs but has been used successfully in a number of other
species. We have already found that many of our patients have responded brilliantly to the
series of four injections given over four weeks. The effects have lasted for months.
Occasionally a booster injection is required. Cartrophen Vet is not simply an
anti-inflammatory drug and or a pain killer like cortisone type drugs or the non steroidal
drugs. While it does have some anti-inflammatory activity, it has other actions which help
a joint to function better. Instead of just settling down joint inflammation and pain
whilst the arthritic changes in the joint become worse, Cartrophen Vet also helps stop the
progression of arthritis. With virtually no side effects (unlike other drugs) and its
other advantages, this drug has become a marvel. Originating in australia, Cartrophen Vet
is now being marketed overseas. There is also work now underway for its use in humans but
I dont think they will call it Cartrophen Vet!
