Nursery News
By Carolyn Pomroy, Silvan Park Nursery

Now that autumn is well and truly here, it’s a great time to get into the garden, dig over the garden beds, plant all plants, and mulch well. Roots become established before the ground cools down in winter, and when spring comes the plants are ready to take off.

Now is also the time to put in fruit trees.

Vegetable gardens should be dug over now, compost added and planted out with vegetables such as broad beans, beetroot, broccoli, cabbages, capsicum, carrots, cauliflower, egg plant, garlic, lettuces, onions, parsley, peas, radish, rhubarb, silver beet, tomatoes, zucchini and all herbs.

To bring colour into the garden for winter, annuals are the answer. Try alyssum, antirrhinum, calendula, carnation, chrysanthemum, dianthus, marigold, pansy, penstemon, petunia, primula, ranunculus, snap dragon, statice, stocks, sweet pea, verbena and viola.

Remember Mother’s Day is approaching, and the Nursery has a lovely selection of beautiful flowering plants, ferns and indoor gardens in coloured decorator pots, all gift wrapped, which will brighten up any mother’s day.
