Open
Garden Scheme
AUSTRALIAS Open Garden Scheme Australias Open Garden Scheme began in
Victoria in 1987 with a modest sixty three gardens being opened. Since then the scheme has
grown to embrace most parts of Australia and more than 760 gardens.
The primary aim of the scheme is the promotion of gardening as a pastime and the
enrichment of gardening knowledge in all aspects. Through the co-operation of many willing
garden owners who open their gardens, it is possible for many people to experience and
observe the achievements of other gardeners.
The scheme has been established in Queensland since August, 1993 and in the first year
seventy gardens opened to visitors. In the five years to June, 1998, that the scheme has
been operating in Queensland almost 180,000 people have gained much pleasure from visiting
open gardens. Next season 145 gardens will be opening in Quensland, 45 of these in the
Tropical North.
The new season begins in August each year.
