Winter Colds & Flu Again
Cold/flu viruses have started up again in the last few weeks, the usual initial
symptoms of sore throat and blocked nose and/or sinuses. This years influenza strain is
expected to be very severe, and has caused major problems in the USA and Europe. Some of
the additional symptoms are - fatigue, stiff neck, headache caused by pressure in the
sinuses, aches and pains. Chest congestion and bronchitis are common. In many people the
symptoms come and go. A different type of virus called an enterovirus can also upset the
stomach with symptoms such as nausea, pain, diarrhoea and vomiting.
Prevention During Cold/Flu Seasons-
- We recommend daily intake of Vitamin C, 500-2000mg/day
- Try to avoid sudden temperature change
- Keep your feet and neck warm
- Avoid crowds at height of flu season
- Take Zinc, 10-20mg/day
- Western medicine recommends vaccination for the elderly or those with health risks
(eg.Asthma). We recommend a Homeopathic version of the vaccination, this can be very
effective
- Eat raw Garlic (this has anti-viral properties)
- Have a course of acupuncture to boost your immune system
- See your Naturopath to help you increase your immune systems response to infection.
Treatment:
- Gargle with luke warm salt water at first sign of a sore throat.
- Take frequent doses of echinacea and large doses of Vitamin C (up to 10,000mg/day).
- In early stage add one crushed clove of garlic, about thumb sized piece of chopped fresh
ginger and grated lemon rind and juice of lemon. Add one cup of water and simmer to about
half a cup and drink. Go to bed under warm blanket and sweat.
- If symptoms are more severe see your Doctor or Natural Health Practitioner for
medications or acupuncture.
If you have the flu - drink plenty of water and take rest.
Avoid coughing near others.
