Locals
fast for global good
by Joanna Jones
IT is 40 hour famine time again and World Vision is hopeful that Palmwoods, Woombye,
Eudlo and Chevallum residents can match or surpass the money they raised in 1998.
Last year 116 residents and organisations in the Palmwoods/Woombye area raised $1541
through the 40 hour famine to help residents of Sudan, Uganda and North Korea. Nationally,
412,000 Australians raised nearly $6 million.
World Visions national 40 Hour Famine manager Jonathan Krause has challenged
local residents to raise a higher amount of money this year and again show they do not
tolerate poverty.
"This event is for people who want a better world and are prepared to make the
effort to turn their vision into reality," he said.
The 1999 40 Hour Famine aims to raise $6 million for projects in Sudan, Rwanda,
Mozambique and other developing nations. Funds will also be used to provide food, medicine
and shelter during emergency relief efforts around the world.
Nearly half a million Australians are expected to give up food or go without something
else, such as watching television for 40 hours from 8pm Friday 14 May to noon on Sunday 16
May.
To join the famine call 133240.
