Woombye
rider excels at championships
by Joanna Jones
CHRISTIE Currie and her Arabian pony, Annas Deelite are certainly making quite a
name for themselves in horse riding circles.
At the recent Queensland State Arabian Championships held at the Exhibition Grounds in
Brisbane, Christie and Anna Deelites were awarded the Overall High Point Performance
Horse of the show.
Christie is the youngest rider to ever receive this award and the scoring covers many
different classes and disciplines.
Although only 12, Christie competed in Open Classes as well as the Youth classes, and
unlike many riders of similar age, she was not handed a pre-trained pony.
Annas Deelite is only five, and Christie has been training her for almost three
years. Bred by Annandale Arabians at Woombye, by Lorraine and Sharyn Currie, Deelite is
one of many highly awarded horses in the stables.
Numerous Australian and State champions have been bred and trained in these stables.
Christie, Lorraines grand-daughter, spends most of her spare time at the stud at
Woombye, riding and training young horses and has an extensive knowledge of breeding and
caring for horses that precedes her years. Christie has an impressive trophy collection.
She has been the State Champion Youth Rider for three years running, as well as Top Ten
and Champion Mare of the Year for two years at the prestigious Elwyn Bligh Arabian Horse
of the Year Show.
Christie also holds the record for the youngest rider to receive a Top Ten belt buckle.
Held in August each year the Elwyn Bligh Arabian Horse of the Year Show, will be
Christie and Deelites main focus for the next few months. She is eyeing off the
major prize of $500 and a $300 trophy.
Win or lose, it does not matter too much because Christie loves to ride and to show off
her best friend, Annas Deelite.
