Pet Talk
With Woombye Vet Paul Shiel B.V.Sc.

Queensland Itch is an allergy that affects many horses in this region. It presents itself as swollen lumps within the skin, that become very itchy. They are commonly found along the mane, wither, back and tail. It is primarily caused by the bites of very small midges, that are mostly active early in the morning and late afternoon. One of the most effective ways to control this problem is to rug your horse whilst the midges are most active. You may also apply insect repellants eg: Pyrethrins - to the exposed areas. A common problem is that through rubbing the sores they become infected, in which case you need to consult your Vet for the best solution. Cheers Paul Sheil.
