Wellington's
Way
with Member for Nicklin Peter Wellington
ALTHOUGH we have seen more than enough rain in Nicklin, water dominated my first speech
in Parliament in March and I received unanimous support for a motion that asked the
Government to look at providing a rebate for people to install rainwater tanks.
Lets face it, we live in one of the fastest growing regions in Australia where
water supply is battling to keep up with demand. I believe that if the Government offers
financial incentives many people would install tanks. Also, there are several high-tech
reasonably priced devices now available to filter tank water. I provided two of these
devices to the Parliament and they are now on display on the Speakers Green.
Parliament sat for three weeks in March and again last week.
I was pleased that I won support from both sides of the House for my motion to require
all State Government bureaucrats and outside consultants to use Plain English when
preparing reports and submissions.
I was disgusted by the patronising gobbley gook used by some bureaucrats that turned
reading reports into nightmares.
During the March sitting I also strongly supported a motion to close licensed premises
at midnight the night before Anzac Day but it was unfortunately defeated.
I am delighted that Nambour has been chosen as the site of the new Regional Communities
North Coast office. This office was opened by Minister Terry Mackenroth on April 7 and
gives a voice to local communities stretching from Pine Rivers to Cooloola.
The Governments Travelsafe Committee is undertaking an inquiry into safety on
country roads and is seeking written submission from the public. All submissions must be
in by May 28, 1999. Contact my office for more information.
I invite non-profit making community or sporting groups to contact my office for
information on State Government grants. We will also provide advice on the preparation of
submissions.
