A word from Peter Slipper

I trust that all Palmwoods and District residents were able to take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made by our service men and women, when Anzac Day was commemorated recently.

I was pleased to see so many local people involved in Anzac Day ceremonies on the Coast and Hinterland. It was a privilege to be able to be involved in five services, beginning with the traditional Dawn Service at the Cotton Tree Cenotaph at 4.28am. The Anzac tradition appears to be growing stronger every year with record crowds attending services across the Coast and Hinterland.

It is indeed encouraging to know that the spirit of the original Anzacs, who landed at Anzac Cove 84 years ago, continues to live on in 1999. The crowds seem to grow larger each year and I was particularly pleased to see so many young people taking the opportunity to pay their respects to the sacrifice made by thousands of Australian service personnel in conflicts throughout the world this century. Standing alongside our service men and women last Sunday morning who have served our nation so proudly, it was difficult not to be moved by the occasion. The RSL Sub branches on the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland should be commended for the effort that they go to each year to organise services.

Redistribution

Most Palmwoods and District people would be aware that the Queensland Redistribution Commission has released a draft report on the proposed changes to state electoral boundaries. The tremendous growth on the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland has resulted in granting of an additional seat to our wonderful part of the world, which I warmly welcome. The South-East corner of Queensland continues to grow at a remarkable rate, with recent figures suggesting that the Maroochy Shire experienced the 7th largest increase in population in the year to June 1998, for the whole of Australia. The additional state seat will be based in the Hinterland area. The electorate of Glasshouse stretches from Eudlo and Mooloolah in the north through Landsborough, Beerwah, and Beerburrum to the outskirts of Caboolture in the south. The redistribution has also altered the boundaries for Nicklin, which will reduce in size to become centred on Nambour. Local Palmwoods residents will still be within Nicklin, however areas below Montville and Palmwoods will be transferred to the new seat of Glasshouse. I encourage residents interested in viewing the draft boundaries to visit my office, Aerodrome Road Maroochydore.
