Project to
honour pioneers
PROJECT 2000, set to see up to 350 individually inscribed terracotta tiles placed in a
commemorative pavement, is being hailed as a "once in a millennium opportunity"
by initiators Palmwoods Progress Association.
"The project is designed to commemorate the current communitys contribution
to the 20th century at the turn of the millenium," PPA president Ron Corelli said.
"Project 2000 is an opportunity for local residents, community organisations and
businesses to literally put their family name down in history. It will also pay tribute to
the pioneering and existing community as we head into the new century."
Each tile will be deeply etched with the name and a message and then be set down as the
central focus of a park to be established in the main street near the Nicklin Clock, which
commemorates the memory of the towns most famous son, former Queensland Premier Sir
Francis Nicklin.
The project is targeted for completion in time for official opening on Australia Day
2000.
"As a permanent monument for Palmwoods, it represents an opportunity for
pioneering families, current residents, businesses and community organisations to claim
their place in history," Mr Corelli said.
"Palmwoods was first settled in 1881 so it is appropriate to keep in touch with
our history as we head into the new century."
The messages include organisations and their foundation dates, businesses and
establishment dates and family names with messages such as "We love it here" and
"our town since..."
Orders are now being taken and the cost of each tile is $100, which covers the cost of
the tile and engraving of two lines of 20 characters a line.
