Gong-Yau self defense is a relatively new method of self defense based on age-old fighting techniques. Methods of defense from judo, karate, ju jitsu, kung fu boxing and wrestling all come into play.

Chief instructor Kim Mojidi holds the rank of instructor in judo, ju jitsu and karate and is also Qld vice president of the Australian Koshiki association. Having worked as a bodyguard for high profile people including Boy George, Duran Duran, Miss World. Mr Mojidi as well as organising concert security for many events, has also had to deal with problem situations many times and as he says he is still in one piece to talk about them.

"The art that I have developed comes out of personal experience as much as traditional technique" he says. "Every martial artist or person with a knowledge of defensehas always been amazed at how real it looks when practicing. Each individual is studied to see there stengths and weaknesses for example its pointless wasting time initially teaching somebody high kicking if their legs are as stiff as a board, it is far better concertrating on the strong points in the person and gradually introducing harder technique of the system for that person to practise this way they learn what is easy for them relatively quickly and can defend themselves using that technique much quicker". This teaching method is so effective in fact that Mr Mojidi promises that anyone after 6 weeks training can defend against a frontal or side attack every time. Classes are held every Wednesday night at the Suncoast Fitness Centre or private lessons are available on 0418 673 673 or 5445 9744. Mr Mojidi has taught the method to several hundred on the coast including students at Nambour High School. The course starts on Thursdays at Palmwoods Hall at 5.45pm on June 3 is open to all over the age of 12.

All are invited along that night for a free demonstration and discussion followed by a joining fee of $59 for the course which includes the cost of a grading to yellow belt and issue of a certificate those wishing to be graded at the end of the course.
