Nursery News
by Carolyn Pomroy, Silvan Park nursery

GREVILLEAS are the most popular Australian plants for the home garden because of their ability to flower for long periods and attract birds. They come in all sizes, from small trees to shrubs to ground covers.

Grevilleas do best in a slightly acid soil which must be well drained. Clay soils should be broken up and improved by adding gypsum, plus an organic mulch which will break down into the clay.

They like an open position in full sun and should be watered well during establishment. After that, natural rainfall should be adequate. Grevilleas don’t require fertiliser if planted in adequate soil, but a modest application of native fertiliser at planting time is recommended.

To get the best growth and flowering from grevilleas, tip pruning while young, then yearly pruning of established plants is recommended. About 1/3 of overall growth early spring.

Grevilleas don’t like having their roots disturbed, so try not to dig around them, or transplant them. Their most common problem is root rot, which can occur after heavy rain like we’ve experienced lately. Good drainage will help alleiviate this problem.

Some new releases to try are Firesprite, Dot Brown and Golden Lyre, all available at Silvan Park Nursery.
