Community awaits boundary decision

THE Eudlo and Ilkley District Community Association is hopeful objections to the proposed State electoral boundaries will be taken on board by the redistribution commission after some 220 people from the district put forward objections.

Association vice chairman Dave Bywaters said some 880 objections had been lodged across the state, with 220 people from the district offering objections to the proposed division of the Eudlo township (which would see Eudlo divided between Glasshouse and Nicklin electorates).

The association put forward a final submission to the redistribution commission following its May meeting, pointing out that 50% of the Eudlo population had actively supported its view that the electors living west of the railway line should be included in the Nicklin electorate.

They outlined others who had supported their submission or had objected to the proposed division and reiterated the association’s reasons for its original objection.

Mr Bywaters said in the local area, 25 individual objections were made and 190 names were collected on a post office petition. All local political representatives had put forward objections as well as some individual shire councillors.

Mr Bywaters said the association had been disappointed that the Maroochy Shire Council had failed to put forward an objection, having asked for an extension and therefore being too late to put forward comment.

He said the Mooloolah Valley Community Association had also put forward strong objections to the division of its district, which was to be split along the railway line, similar to the Eudlo division.

Mr Bywaters said the objections became public property once the electoral commission had looked at them, and the objections and a Commission report would be available in Maroochy Shire libraries for anyone interested in reading them.

"We are now in the hands of the redistribution committee and hope that the original criteria (for electoral divisions) regarding ‘community of interest’ is taken on board.’’

A result from the commission is not due until August.

The next meeting of the Eudlo and Ilkley District Community Association is on Tuesday, June 29, at the Eudlo Hall, followed immediately by the Eudlo Hall and Recreation Ground Association meeting. Inquiries contact Mr Bywaters on 5478 8877.
