Hinterland
shire claims local support
PROVEN support for a review of the hinterland shire proposal by the
Electoral Commission has increased from 70% in 1997 to 92%, Steering Committee chairman
John Chiarotto said.
"Teams interviewed 248 Sunshine Coast residents, from the Coast
and the hinterland, in a period of six hours at the Saturday of the Maleny Show.
Of these, 229 signed the petition and only 19 were either opposed to
the call for a review, or were undecided. Mr Chiarotto said.
"Its time that Caloundra and Maroochy Councils stopped
behaving like spoilt children and face up to the fact that there is a very significant
degree of community support for a hinterland shire review - and its not going to go
away, no matter how far into the sand they push their heads.
"If Maroochy Council can claim democratic support for its proposal
on postal voting, by interviewing 300 people and have only 57% agree, youd expect
they will surely act on our 92%, Mr Chiarotto said.
The Hinterland Shire Steering Committee will continue to seek support
at William Landsborough Day and at the Nambour Show.
"We challenge the councils to send observers and confirm the
degree of support were getting, Mr Chiarotto said.
