Gardens launched on World Environment Day
By Joanna Jones

MAROOCHY Shire celebrated World Environment Day with the launch of Maroochy’s newest environmental showpiece - the Bushland Botanic Garden at Tanawha.

The launch on Friday , June 4, was conducted by Maroochy Shire Mayor Don Culley.

Mr Culley said durint the luanch that it was "an exciting chapter in the development of the Bushland Botanic Garden’’.

As a symbolic gesture to World Environment Day, a number of rehabilitated native birds, including an emerald ground dove and a kingfisher, were released on site at the time of the launch.

"The release of the birds which have been cared for by our local wildlife group, Wilvos, reinforces the need to secure parcels of bushland not only for regional flora preservation but also for fauna habitat,"Mr Culley said.

"The Bushland Botanic Garden will become an important community facility, and the work that groups such as The Friends of the Botanic Gardens are undertaking will be an invaluable legacy for future generations."

Proposed enhancements to the site include a Lagoon Boardwalk and Bird Hides, a Butterfly Boardwalk and an Outdoor Education Area.

Young artists from a number of local schools enthused by the beauty of the Bushland Botanic Garden shared their creative works at the launch.

Hundreds of supporters turned out to the launch and were addressed by Dave Simons, president of the Friends of the Botanic Gardens, Maroochy Councillor Joe Natoli, as well as the mayor.

As a memento of the occasion, Mr Culley placed a time capsule on the site.

"This capsule which is to be opened in 20 years will provide an opportunity for others to look back on the birth of the Maroochy Busland Botanic Garden and to consider its transformation from 1999 to 2019," he said.

The Bushland Botanic Garden has also been approved by the Maroochy Shire Council to be a ‘Centenary of Federation Project’.
