COUNCIL
BRIEFS
WITH CR GEOFF LITTLER
Its Rain Again
I SPOKE too soon last month, when I said that the weather had improved and roads could
be brought up to standard.
Its raining and road maintenance and construction are again being held up.
Often when roads deteriorate and maintenance falls behind, the people living along
unsealed roads remind me that they receive little return for their rates.
Last budget saw 20% of the general rate being spent on road maintenance.
For example, this applied to a road with 20 properties, each paying on an average of
$1000 per annum in general rates, shows that the residents along this road have
contributed $4000 towards the maintenance of their road.
The remainder goes to other shire services such as road construction, drainage,
bridges, parks , libraries, street lighting, swimming pools etc, but not including water,
sewerage and waste management.
All residents irrespective of where they live make use of all or some of these
services.
Divisional Boundaries
I HAVE been advised by the Electoral Commission of Queensland that the submission from
Council in respect to the review of divisional boundaries for the 2000 elections will be
on display for public comment by July 5 at the latest.
An advertisement will be placed in the Sunshine Coast daily newspaper
advising of where the display can be seen.
There are some small changes to Division 2 boundaries near Nambour and
Montville.
Draft Planning Scheme
AS mentioned in an earlier edition of Council Briefs, the scheme goes on public display
on June 15.
Within the next few days I will have a copy for the Woombye Progress Association;
Palmwoods Progress Association; Palmwoods Residents & Ratepayers Association; Eudlo
& llkley District Community Association; and The Rural Landholders Association.
I will contact the aforementioned associations as soon as the copies come to hand.
Residents are urged to contact any one of these associations to participate in their
discussions of the Draft Planning Scheme.
