Wellington's
Way
by Peter Wellington, Member for Nicklin
IT has been a year since I took office, the chilly weather is here, the rain has gone
(hopefully) and it is a great time to get out in the electorate and start door knocking.
I have tried to clear my desk as much as possible with the help of my wife Jenny and
some volunteers, I hope to deliver my newsletter to the majority of households in Nicklin.
If we run out of time, I will try to reach the rest via the mail service.
During the last sitting of Parliament I voted against a Bill to allow the Government to
compulsorily acquire land for third parties. In my speech I said that I did not support
the delegation of power from State Parliament to a Senior Public Servant because it
allowed that public servant to decide if someone should lose their land because a private
developer wanted it to build infrastructure on.
I joined the Coalition and Government in opposing a One Nation attempt to allow people
to hold pump action shot guns without having a licence.
I also voted against the Governments Industrial Legislation because I firmly
believed that it would create new problems for the small business operators.
A record number of Bills are before the Parliament and will be debated at the July
sitting.
The proposed Retired Village Legislation to be presented to Parliament next month does
nothing for the people who are already locked into the present system. I urge everyone who
will be affected by it to relay their concerns to the Minister. Contact my office for more
information. I will certainly not be supporting it in its present form.
I will be part of a Parliamentary delegation to visit America and Canada in August to
visit Silicone Valley, meet with Nortel executives, Microsoft and other leaders in the
Information Technology field.
The aim of this delegation is to entice clean industries to this State and more
specifically the Sunshine Coast.
I saw more than 50 people at my electorate office last month and attended the following
list of meetings and functions in your area in the past month:
Burnside High 20th anniversary school reunion; St Augustine Palmwoods anniversary
celebration (wife Jenny deputised); St Josephs School Queensland Day celebrations.
