Chiro Connection
from Dr Bernard Love of Woombye Chiropractic

HAVE you ever stopped to consider what is going on ‘inside’ you?

You are composed of 75 trillion cells. There are approximately 200 different cell types. Each type of cell perform different job. Cells are arranged into tissues, and tissues are further organised into very specialised structures called organs.

The organs, combined with other tissues, form systems eg. respiratory system, cardiovascular system, reproductive system. Just as each cell has a specific job, each system performs a specialised-function. The respiratory system is highly specialised at transferring oxygen from the air we breathe to the red blood cells, taking carbon dioxide and water vapour from the red blood cells and removing them from the body. This transfer of gases occurs between the special cells of the lungs and the very small blood vessels which lie adjacent to one another. Our lungs can transfer these gases at a rate of 60 - 100 litres per minute and higher, depending on our activity level.

The circulatory system is comprised of thousands of kilometres of blood vessels and carries oxygen and nutrients to every tissue in the body. The heart is a specialised pump which moves the blood by contracting approximately 100,000 times every day. In fact, from the third month of foetal development until the day you die, your heart will never rest.

Your digestive system processes every morsel of food-you eat, utilizing mechanical force, acid and enzymes to break down the food ready for absorbtion by the small intestine. Movement is made possible by the co-ordinated action of the musculo-skeletal system. Meanwhile, your immune system is monitoring your entire body for the presence of foreign bacteria, virus, foreign matter. It is standing ready to repel any invasion. Your repair mechanism is poised 24 hours a day to repair any breach to your first line of defence, your skin. Your endocrine system is constantly producing chemicals called hormones which regulate many of your body’s functions. These hormones are produced by glands and released directly into the bloodstream to be transported around the body.

All cells of the body (barr the brain) are regularly being replaced. As old cells die, new ones take their place. Special scavenger cells help remove the debris of damaged and dead cells. An incredible symphony of function occurs without as much as a thought from you.

All these intricate operations along with many millions more are co-ordinated by the master control system - your nervous system, headed by your brain. Millions of signals pass from brain to body and body to brain every second to keep this glorious symphony called YOU in tune and on tempo.

Life - everyday mundane to magnificent - is a miracle of co-ordinated function. Take a moment today and every day to appreciate it. Make a time, soon,to have your master control system - your spine and nervous system - checked by a Chiropractor.

Chiropractic is devoted to caring for your vital nervous system.
