Grid Iron League

GRID Iron fever is hitting Palmwoods this winter with the advent of a new Sunshine Coast Grid Iron league being formed at Briggs Park Palmwoods.

The Sunshine Coast Dragons Grid Iron Club, headed by James Schonknecht of Palmwoods, is holding a sign-on/information day on Sunday August 1 at Briggs Park from 3 to 6 pm. The league will consist of four, nine-a-side teams from Caloundra through to Nambour. Players are needed from age 16 upwards, and dependent on demand, a junior league may be started at a later date.

President James said that by playing in the Sunshine Coast league, players gain a chance to be selected in the Qld Grid Iron League, which can lead to opportunities to play in up to five US college teams a year.

"Grid Iron is a fast, hard-hitting game of strategy. It is not for the faint-hearted. If you are an athletic type that loves a challenge, then Grid Iron is for you," he said.

"We have had a lot of local interest in this league from existing Grid Iron players and first-timers. We are also looking for sponsorship from local businesses," said James. "The Palmwoods Hotel has given us a lot of encouragement and support and we are keen to hear from other organisations also."
